I will not be posting on this tumblr anymore. From now on, I will be posting all art/photography/etc at Ocular Canticle. My new primary tumblr will be Vertiginious — there you’ll find bizarre ephemera, cute animals, and whatever other miscellany I dredge up.
I’ll be posting the same kind of stuff, but I just wanted to be able to more decisively divide the art & photography I post from the other stuff. Cheers, and hope a few of you venture over to the new tumblr blogs.
René Magritte. The Pleasure Principle (Portrait of edward James), 1937. Oil on canvas, 79 x 63.5 cm.
Edward James Foundation, Chichester.
Artist Richard Saja manipulates pre-existing historical scenes printed on fabric known as toile, by threading colorful floss over and around the people and creatures inhabiting them. As a blend of humor and delightfully odd imaginings, the work carries the weight of the past within its foundations while new skins of magic, freak shows, circus clowns and odd couplings brighten the compositions and infuse it with a sincere beauty.
